Very Important sabre video (must watch for sabre fencers/referees)
The FIE has created a video, hosted by several world-class coaches and referees, complete with weird graphics and such, explaining how sabre is to be fenced and called by the referee. Much of it will surprise or even shock most local sabre fencers/refs, and this is good. The disconnect between world level calls and local calls is something that needs to STOP. There simply isn't a reason it should be called differently. It is only because the poor efforts made to train coaches and referees. Anybody who has an interest in sabre will find plenty of things to learn here. Myself, I even found a couple of things I didn't know, such as the value given to a point-in-line, when an attack ends in one, and I esp. found interest in a clarification in the "flunge" (the feet cannot cross, ever!) Plenty of talking in this long video, with quirky English subtitles, but keep watching, each section ends with world-level fencers in an actual bout doing these actions, and a "you-make-the-call" type of pause, followed by a slow-motion breakdown of each action. A must watch! If you have any questions about terms used in the video, or general questions, feel free to post!
