Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday
Modified By Will on 10/30/2007 1:10:56 PM)
(*Edit: this is a pretty old thread now, and I wanted to make sure anybody just coming to it now was pretty up to date...this is the notice I just put up on the website...
Breaking News - NFC will be adding a new Naperville location on Wednesday evenings, at Scullen Middle School. The format will be open fencing, with lessons available. Membership information is as discussed in our forums (go read them), and complete details, such as beginning dates, and registration details TBA soon. Registration will be directly through NFC, not a 3rd party.*)
--------------------------------

If anyone reading this is interested in fencing on wednesday evenings at a school in  South Naperville, electric of course, please respond ASAP. I have the means to go ahead on this, but I would like to know who's interested before I do it. Cost would be $30 per month per household, with $5/month for each additional family member, so if your wife wants to fence too, that's $35/month. For that you'd get open fencing, 2-3 hours (not set yet), and TWO free lessons per month. More lessons could be bought whenever you like, of course.

Again, please respond ASAP so I know if there's enough interest for this location to warrant my putting this through.

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday
I forgot to mention you can reply via this thread OR email, which is info@napervillefencingclub.com
I will pull the trigger on this if I can get some fairly firm responses from at least a handful of people who want to fence in the south naperville area, and I should also mention that the facility is pretty much a done deal, in a south naperville school, but I don't want to start the (probably annoying) final processes of it until I know there's some people who want what I outlined above.

I will be bringing the matter up with a buddy of mine... will get back to you on this. Are we not fencing at any other time?

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday
We've been fencing at Downer's Grove and Glen Ellyn this entire time, so I'm not sure what you're referring to. In the past year or so, we've gone 100% electric at DG, and added electric for the first time regularly at GE, and 4-5 people started fencing competitively for the first time at this past IL divisionals, so there's actually a lot of fencing going on, and has been for quite some time.

This is about adding a third location, this time in south naperville. If I don't get the feeling that there's at least 6 people willing to commit, I won't feel it's worth my time, and it won't happen. I know 6 people have said they're "interested", which is the usual level of commitment you can squeeze out of people, and I've had around 4 people whom I feel are pretty solidly juiced about it, but I don't feel like starting the process of scheduling everything until there's a few more solid people. I'm sure most if not all of the "interested" people will show up too at some point,  but it's not the kind of passion that makes me enjoy the process.

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday

Hey, this is Keir. Sorry I haven't been able to make it out for a while - school was really busy. Just wondering what all of the options are for fencing this summer. I can't make Wednesday or Friday but would like to start up fencing again on one of the other days. I saw that there is fencing in DG and Glen Ellen but I don't know where they are located. Please let me know.

Thanks - Keir.

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday

Heya, hope things are going well for you!  I had a link saved to Ben Franklin school from google maps, double check with Will as I think they had some venue changes but here is the link.  Hope this helps!  I can't make it to too much myself this summer as my kids have all kinds of stuff going on almost every day of the week!  Grrr...  <jj>  I hope you get back into the swing of things.  The club needs more lefties although on Mondays at the CCLC sometimes we only have lefties (3 out of the 4 main people who show up every week are lefties).

http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=350+Bryant+Ave,+Glen+Ellyn,+IL+60137+(Glen+Ellyn+School+District+41%3A+Benjamin+Franklin+Elementary+School)&geocode=13863311420508369312,41.871733,-88.052823&saddr=75th+Street+%26+Rickert+Rd,+Naperville,+IL,+60563&f=d&hl=en&dq=ben+franklin+school,+loc%3A+Glen+ellyn,+IL&cid=41871733,-88052823,11580608534481245803&ie=UTF8&ll=41.809708,-88.110008&spn=0.127438,0.365295&z=12&om=1

You should be able to get decent directions from this point.  You should be able to google the Lincoln center in DG from here too and get decent directions to that location.  For July, if you want a location in Naperville, there are a couple of people meeting at the Celebration Community Life Center on Washington St, just down about 2 blocks from Edward's Hospital.  Not sure if we are going to continue in that location after the end of July however.  Of course if we don't maybe I can get out to DG on Monday's but that would have to be without the kids I suppose...hrmmm. Well, have to go catch a plane.  Have a good summer if I don't see you.

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday
Ok, post 4th, I have some time...
Summer fencing is available, if you join one of the two programs we offer, in GE and/or DG. Some do both, like Vamsi.
For Downer's Grove, register through the DG park district and get a pro-rated rate for the remaining 7 or so weeks. Monday from 6pm-7:30pm. Fencing in DG is at Lincoln Center on Maple Ave. Call 963-1300.

For GE, there's one week left after tonight, I'll let you just drop in this week and/or next to visit (bring your stuff, of course) email your phone number to info@napervillefencingclub.com and I'll call you back ASAP, next session starts sometime after 7/12 (their website is down atm, so I don't have the details right this second) Thursdays 7:30-9pm. Fencing in GE is at Forest Glen School, which you access from a staff entrance on Main St. Glen Ellyn, just a hair south of Elm St. call 858-2462 for GE.

Both programs are very much unlike the old ones you last attended. These are both highly structured, fast moving, intense programs with a high degree of drilling, stress on fitness, ending with structured fencing, although until august or so, the fencing at the end is deliberately "unstructured". These are not open fencing, do whatever you want. Expect to work hard, and since this is the summer, we're doing a lot of basic movements, strength building, basic footwork, 2-step, millions of lunges. Late July, we'll be moving from exercise basics to slightly more complex drilling, and start to intro tactics in a very basic way. By august, we'll be ramping up the complexity level, and starting to do structured bouts and situationals.

Update on Wednesdays:
I've heard around 4 solids from people, and several "interested". Depending on what I hear this coming Monday, I'll make a decision Monday night. If you are interested, or wish to comment or influence my decision, please make sure and do so ASAP.

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday
Was I a "solid" or a "maybe"?  I hope it was "solid."  I, for one hope it works out.  I am glad that you are basing the decision on who responds and how many people will commit.

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday

I emailed Ed on Monday and he said he was going to email you on this subject Will to ask the specifics.  Just wanted to let you know about that in case he forgot or something.  I haven't heard back from any of the other 3 people that attend regularly on Monday's at the CCLC however.  I see they haven't posted here either so I don't know what they are thinking.

Later for now,

JS

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday
Dave, a solid, which beats a liquid or a gas (or plasma).
I'd say it's pretty close atm, I haven't had the kind of response one way or another to make it a lock, so I'm very much on the fence as to what I'll decide. Like I wrote, monday will probably clarify things, unless I hear some things during the weekend via here or email.

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday
Okay, but if I had to be a state of matter, I think it would be cool to be a gas.

Re: Fencing in Naperville on Wednesday
I'm going to go ahead and start the process of finalizing wednesdays, so full steam ahead. It might take a while to wrap it up, I really have no idea, that's entirely in the hands of the school system, it seems. I'll update everybody on dates/times as soon as I know them myself.
