October 6th, Burton Open @ Northwestern Univ.
Modified By Will on 4/23/2008 12:00:18 AM)

Will's note: This is an open, so fencers 13+ please. Younger ones will enjoy watching this event. This looks like a very strong event, so you newer open fencers will want to attend this to get some much-needed exp on strong events. You need to work your way up from the bottom sometime, now's a good time to begin.*)

Currently all the events look very strong and inviting, the first true significant open of the season! Try to make this one!!!

Re: Next Recommended Event: October 6th, Burton Open @ Northwestern Univ.

I will be there.  I pre-registered via askfred.net about a month ago.  This is usually a pretty fun and usually on the larger side local tournament.  Not as fun/big as the Remenyik mind you but fun nonetheless as it is more low key than the Rem.  I believe last year they used NW's new metal strips for this event too which are very nice to fence on.  Hopefully NFC can field a bunch of fencers for this event and the Remenyik.  I miss the days of having 8 or 9 people from NFC at the same tournament.  Having a group at an event makes it much more fun in my opinion.  If anyone needs any help with weapons (testing or repair), small parts, or general equipment, just let me know, I will be happy to help at the tournament or with general equipment concerns before the event.  Hopefully I will be at club on Thursdays from now on...hopefully.

Later for now,

JS

I'm hoping to get my equipment together enough to compete in epee and possibly sabre as well. We'll see, as much of that depends on my having time and energy with my roof repairs.

It would be really fun to get a bunch of NFC people to go considering there is at least half a dozen of us that could...I'm hoping to go, so long as nothing gets unexpectedly thrown at me...

Sure. It will be a tough event, so that might limit some people's willingness, but you, Nick, and Chase should certainly go.

Sure, Pat too, but it's more optional for him. I recall he can still hit the Y14's this year, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm so-so on being able to get there right now. My roof is finished though, at least for the most part. I won't really look at my equipment until tomorrow, however. Sabre is a possibility, if I get more sleep the next couple of days.

Randomly ran into Pat tonight... said he had no idea there was a tournement, but he said he would come, assuming he can and his gear is in working condition.

Re: Next Recommended Event: October 6th, Burton Open @ Northwestern Univ.
ugh, I wish he'd use the website! I probably won't be making it, even to watch. On one hand, I have three working weapons, all passing tests, but on the other hand, I have a couple of minor things wrong with the body, including this weird deep heel bruise I got this afternoon...weird because I wasn't actually doing anything at the time. Barely walk at the moment. But mostly, I need to work! I finished a new piece, and the score needs a lot of cleaning and arranging before publication, and I need to get it done soon so I can get all the legal and printing/publishing stuff done before mid-november, plus starting a new project at the same time. Good luck to all who are going, try to remember all the bouts and touches so we can discuss and work on issues. Take notes after each bout if required.

Re: Next Recommended Event: October 6th, Burton Open @ Northwestern Univ.
Got back and I survived. Got knocked out in my first rounds of DE's to a pretty good U of I fencer. I know Chase got through his first round and not sure how John did. Went 0-5 in my pools during which I lost 2 that I should have easily won. Had a fun pool that included René Castellanos (D), John Lartz (B), Seth Hall (B), and 2 other Us. Had a -9 touch difference. Raised metal strips are my favorite thing ever because refs can no longer jip me out of my foot touches which is what I was surviving on most of the day. I had some amazing foot touches that shocked people. Got some great compliments from fellow fencers and had a great time...glad I went and I really wish you would have been there Will. I really think it was the best I've ever fenced even though I didn't win a single bout.

Re: Next Recommended Event: October 6th, Burton Open @ Northwestern Univ.
I saw your results on askFred. You had a number of close bouts, I know you did very well.

I couldn't be there today for a large number of reasons, including family stuff, my back started killing me last night, my bruised heel, need to work, and lastly (and most problematic), my car doesn't want to start this fine evening. Considering that while it looks bad, it's otherwise in perfect mechanical order, it's pretty much got to be either a fuel issue (unlikely, but possible) or a computer issue (more trouble, and likely). So, I almost registered Friday night, but it's a good thing I didn't, cause I wouldn't of gotten out of the driveway.
